Home is where the heart is, or the food. Winnipeg’s culinary scene holds its own on a global stage, which is probably why no matter where I go in the world, I’m always craving food from one of my favourite restaurants back home. And while the winter months may lack the patios that we Winnipeggers hold near and dear to our hearts, it’s just as nice to settle into a cozy restaurant on a snowy evening and get your fill of comfort food. Here are 10 restaurants that will warm your soul (and belly) this winter…

Aurora Pizzeria & Cafe

842 Corydon Avenue

Aurora Pizzeria & Cafe is making a big splash in the Corydon neighbour. Just a few weeks ago, I tried to call (quite late) to make a reservation and it was clear from the lively buzz in the background of the call that the place was packed! For good reason, too – the owners moved here straight from Italy, bringing with them authentic pizza and other Italian dishes.

Izakaya Edokko Bar and Sushi

190 Smith Street

Izakaya Edokko Bar and Sushi is a welcome addition to the city’s food scene, ushering scrumptious Japanese fare to downtown Winnipeg. Chef Masa Sugita and Chef Alan Yin are the masterminds behind the upscale lounge that is sure to please even the pickiest of sushi lovers. Izakaya is participating in Ciao’s Dine About this month; an ideal way to get a 3-course introduction to the what the restaurant has to offer.

Annajo’s Bistro

289 Main Street
Plum Coulee

Located in the small town of Plum Coulee, Annajo’s Bistro is more than worth the trip. Restaurant owner Jodi takes a real pride in providing home-cooked, out-of-the-ordinary meals to the community (and to hungry visitors) and has become quite well known for her mouth-watering breakfast and daily dessert selections.

1450 Ellice Avenue

We don’t usually include fast food joints on our restaurant lists, but Jollibee definitely qualifies for an exception. As the only Jollibee location in Canada, the opening of this Filipino fast food restaurant was kind of a big deal in Winnipeg, with hundred of individuals lining up for hours to get a taste of the iconic fried chicken, sweet spaghetti and peach-mango pie.

Mugsy’s Deli

114 Main Street
Flin Flon

Homemade soups, stacked sandwiches and plenty of fresh, healthy options – what more could you ask for from a deli? Located in Flin Flon, Mugsy’s Deli is a cute little restaurant known for its creamy dill soup and club sandwich. Owner Natasha Ward’s knack for connecting with customers and providing consistent quality makes Mugsy’s Deli one of the busiest lunch spot in the northern town.

Bouchée Boucher

101-300 Tache Avenue

Another participant in Ciao’s Dine About, Bouchée Boucher is new to the St. Boniface scene, bringing with it a focus on small-farm, sustainable meat. Part restaurant, part butcher shop, the menu at Bouchée Boucher is known to shift and change depending on the cut of the day, but one thing remains the same: it’s consistently delicious.

Brereton Lake Resort

Highway 307
Brereton Lake

Open every day except Tuesdays, Brereton Lake Resort is a popular spot for those who spend winter in Whiteshell Provincial Park. Snowshoers, snowmobilers and cabin-goers all gather at Brereton Lake Resort for pub favourites such as pizza, chicken wings, burgers, as well as for quality steak dinners.

Tana Ethiopian Cuisine

Tana Ethiopian Cuisine

302 10th Street

Generous portions, authentic flavour and incredible customer service make Tana Ethiopian Cuisine a stand out in Brandon’s culinary landscape. If you’ve never tried Ethiopian food before, the buffet is a great place to start, with 12 dishes to sample and choose from. If we still haven’t convinced you to give this restaurant a try, just take a look at some of the raving reviews.

Best Pizza & Donair

1469 Pembina Hwy

Serving up the best of Middle Eastern cuisine, Best Pizza & Donair certainly lives up to its name, delivering mouth-watering donairs, shawarma, kebabs, falafel and yes, pizza. If you’re not familiar with donair, imagine a perfect piece of seasoned meat, roasting slowly against a vertical rotisserie until it is cooked to ideal tenderness.

Rhyme or Reason Cafe

191 Reimer Avenue

You don’t need a rhyme or a reason to take a trip to Steinbach to visit this adorable cafe. The small menu packs plenty of flavour, with options such as waffles and quiche for breakfast and 2 choices of soup, sandwiches and salad for lunch. Check the Rhyme or Reason Twitter feed for daily specials!
