Home on the range: farm stays and guest ranches
9 Finger Ranch
Surround yourself with gorgeous lakes and rolling hills at 9 Finger Ranch, located on the south end of Riding Mountain National Park in Rossburn. At this working cattle ranch, you can saddle up and take a ride off the beaten path on horseback for a chance to view wildlife and explore the vast National Park area. With a unique cowboy way of doing things, the Ranch offers an authentic and natural experience that will take you into the heart of Manitoba’s Parklands. As a certified HI hostel, backpackers can rent a single bed on a low travel budget. Cabins and rooms are also available.
Room to Grow
With a serious interest in sustainable, organic living and economic fairness, Room to Grow takes a simple approach to accommodation and adventure. Guests are encouraged to interact with their surroundings – whether it be stepping outside of their guesthouse at night to listen to the coyotes howl, working in the greenhouse or by participating in a wilderness skills workshop. Located South of Boissevain, the gently rolling landscape is close to Turtle Mountain Provincial Park and the Souris River Bend. The woodland farm offers hospitality to WWOOFers (traveling organic farm workers) and young people looking to intern or learn more about organic farming.
Frenchs Farm Cottage Guest House
Live the farm life at Frenchs Farm Cottage Guest House, located near the town of Kelwood on the East side of Riding Mountain National Park. The farm owners take a holistic approach to raising their cattle and pigs by never using hormones and never containing their animals to a feedlot or barn. Here, you can witness cows grazing and pigs rooting in the bush and pasture. Take part in farm-themed workshops or simply relax in the large gardens or by the fitpit. The secluded cottage is the perfect place to get away from it all and enjoy some you-time, though we can’t guarantee you won’t be interrupted by the occasional moo or oink.
Glamping under the stars: yurts and oTENTiks
Created by Parks Canada, the oTENTik is an easier way to experience camping for those who may be trying it for the first time, or those who want a little bit more comfort. Meeting in the middle between tent and cabin, oTENTiks can be found in Wasagaming in Riding Mountain National Park. The structure contains three sleeping platforms (perfect for air mattresses), a table and chairs, and a wood stove. Experience the most luxurious camping option available on your next trip out into the bush!
Tired of roughing it? Enjoy 450 square feet of comfort in Rossburn Yurts, located on the sunset shores of Rossman Lake. These modern versions of ancient shelters radiate a sense of simplicity and tradition. Listen to the soothing sounds of the lake as you indulge in this Manitoba getaway. If you’re looking for a romantic yet down-to-earth vacation, become a ‘yurt-hugger’ this summer!
