This region of Manitoba features pockets of tall grass prairie, intact swaths of boreal forest and the 10th largest freshwater lake in the world (Lake Winnipeg). Its diverse landscapes are almost as diverse as its people - with Indigenous, French, Icelandic and Mennonite among the many communities ready to welcome you.
The South East corner of the province is home to some of Manitoba’s favourite provincial parks, including the soft white sandy beach of Grand Beach, the year-round natural playground of Whiteshell and the family-friendly festival site of Birds Hill.
Other preserved places in the region include Manitoba’s only UNESCO world heritage site, Pimachiowin Aki, recognized for its natural and cultural significance. Within the world’s largest expanse of untouched boreal wilderness, the First Nations communities here uphold their traditions as keepers of the land.
The museums, historic sites and festivals in other communities in the region bring to life many cultures that reflect Manitoba’s diversity. Places like Gimli and Hecla showcase their Icelandic roots, while French Manitoba passion and history are alive in places like St. Malo and St. Pierre-Jolys.
Feel the rush of reeling in a walleye or flying through the forest on cross country skis. Embrace the calm while watching the northern lights dance or paddling across a lake at sunset. However you want to connect with nature, the Whiteshell delivers.
