The Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company (PHS) was created in 1896 to serve farmers in the Wawanesa area. Alonzo Fowler Kempton, its founder, began the operation by insuring straw-burning threshing machines. Wawanesa Mutual has grown to become the second largest Canadian-owned insurance company.
