Tall Grass Prairie Bread Company- The Forks

Located in Winnipeg, Tall Grass Prairie Bread Company is all about local, organic and made from scratch. There are two bakery locations – the original one at 859 Westminster Avenue in the Wolseley neighbourhood, and the second on the main floor of The Forks Market at the historic junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers.

Tall Grass is one of Winnipeg’s original organic bakeries. Our signature product is the classic whole wheat cinnamon bun, which customers with cravings have taken around the globe!

Organic agriculture is practiced without the use of artificial fertilizers or pesticides. In doing so, we demonstrate our desire to take responsibility for the gifts of the Earth. We see this choice as fundamental to caring for the Earth’s health, as well as our own.

The ancient tradition of bread making is celebrated with every loaf, as we work with a number of Manitoba farm families, each growing special varieties of local organic grain for use at Tall Grass. Daily, stone mills grind these whole grains into fresh flour.

“Our foundation has always been local older varieties of organic wheat,” says bakery co-owner Tabitha Langel. Spelt, a member of the wheat family, was embraced as part of the Tall Grass family in 2004. It is often tolerated by people with gluten sensitivity, and has a low glycemic index which helps maintain stable blood sugar levels.

Organic Red Fife flour was introduced in 2015. It is used in all Tall Grass breads and buns, as well as most of the sourdough breads. This ancient wheat has remained unaltered by genetic modification.

Tall Grass bakery opened its doors in support of struggling farmers, and to bring the production of good food to the city.
