We try our best to have respect for the environment so we harvest the Birch bark while cutting Birch cord/fire wood. This serves us two purposes, first we use every stitch of bark on the tree that we cut down and second the wood is then distributed throughout the community to be used by those who have wood stoves to heat their homes. We can make approximately 10 large size baskets from 1 tree, depending on its size. Also Birch bark can only be stripped off EASILY in the Spring and early Summer months. Therefore we only make limited amounts of baskets each year. This year we are estimating that we will be cutting down approximately 15-20 Birch trees, which works out to be less than two cords of wood.
