Every year, thousands of ice fishing enthusiasts descend on Manitoba for some good ol' hard water angling. And while there are endless lakes to set up on (just check out the Hunt Fish blog for dozens of articles and safety tips), these 5 ice fishing hotspots provide all the fixings for beginner anglers and their families to get started.
1. FortWhyte Alive
If you're completely new to ice fishing but want to learn more about the sport, visit FortWhyte Alive on January 26 for a lesson with Urban Angling Partnership and Manitoba Wildlife Federation. Pre-registration is required and equipment is supplied.
2. Icebound Excursions
Another great option for beginners is an ice fishing excursion on Lake Winnipeg with Icebound Excursions. While experienced anglers might opt to fully rent the SnoBear for the day in their search for Greenback Walleye, those just starting out will feel at ease with an all-inclusive fishing day that includes a driver, sonar, ice fishing gear, bait and lunch - all from the ultimate (heated) ice fishing machine!
3. Wekusko Falls Lodge
Ice fishing season is extra long in Northern Manitoba, which means even more opportunity to reel in a master. Located 2 hours north of The Pas and 2 hours west of Flin Flon, Wekusko Falls Lodge is picturesque getaway where you can have your pick of ice fishing on 10+ lakes! The all-inclusive ice fishing package includes all the essentials; from your cabin/accommodations to your meals, equipment, fishing guide and even professional photos of your catches!
4. Bakers Narrows Lodge
Located just outside of Flin Flon, this luxury lodge is open year-round, offering out of this world ice fishing on Lake Athapapuskow. Reel in Trophy Lake Trout, Walleye, Northern Pike and more on a guided ice fishing excursion. Snowmobiles, shacks and gear are all available for rent - making for unlimited options and fishing opportunities!
5. Riverside Lodge
Lake Dauphin is already known as a hotspot for ice fishing, but accessing this special spot in Manitoba is made even easier with Riverside Lodge. The lodge welcomes anglers of all skill levels (yes, even those first timers) and are able to provide fully guided fishing days, tackle/gear, meals and lake shuttles.
Lake Winnipeg Ice Fishing Shacks
Once you gain some experience and obtain some equipment of your own but lack a shelter, Lake Winnipeg Ice Fishing Shack Rentals are the way to go - accommodating between 4 and 6 people with heating and insulation.
Be aware that you need to register for a fishing license prior to your trip. Family Fishing Weekend is held February 16 - 18, 2019 (excluding federal parks). During these weekends, people wishing to fish may do so without acquiring a licence. All other rules and regulations will apply. Conservation limits apply to those angling without a licence, who normally would require one. Please note specific lake regulations. For more information, call 204-945-6784.
