Easy Ways to Explore Manitoba When Gas Prices Are Too High

When gas prices spike, travel plans can feel like the first thing to go. But here’s the good news: exploring Manitoba doesn’t have to mean long drives or big spending.

In fact, some of the best experiences in the province are either free or surprisingly close to home. And when you’re comparing flights to local travel... staycations can mean an incredible experience at a fraction of the price. With a little creativity (and maybe a shorter road trip), you can still get out, explore and make the most of your time.

Build Your Trip Around Free Experiences

Manitoba is full of free things to do year-round – here are a few ideas to get you started:

The result? A full day (or weekend) of experiences that cost little to nothing in every corner of the province. Check out our blog “The Ultimate List of Free Things to do in Manitoba” for more ideas!

Day Trips That Deliver More

Opting for a day trip instead of a longer road trip is one of the easiest ways to cut down on fuel costs without missing out on the experience. Manitoba has easy day trip options that let you uncover hidden gems and explore charming communities, scenic landscapes and quirky roadside attractions, all within a short drive.

Whether you have just a day to spare or are looking for adventure without committing the kilometres, shorter day trips still offer plenty of variety while keeping your travel time (and gas usage) to a minimum.

Carpool and Share the Experience

Split gas costs with friends or family and turn the journey into part of the adventure. Or consider joining a Manitoba Facebook group around your interest, be it hiking, camping/RVing or birding, and ask if anyone’s up for carpooling. Offer to lead a carpool yourself if you’ve got a destination or trip already planned. It’s a fast way to make new friends and save on gas while still having fun.

Take Alternate Transportation

Another easy way to keep costs down is to rethink how you get around.

Winnipeg Transit makes it simple to explore the city without worrying about parking or fuel, with routes connecting many of the city’s top attractions, neighbourhoods and green spaces like Assiniboine Park, FortWhyte Alive, Manitoba Museum, Canadian Museum for Human Rights and The Forks. Bus tickets are $3.45 per ride when you pay in cash on the bus or $3.10 when you buy paper tickets or use a Peggo Card.

Check out Winnipeg Trolley Company for a unique way to see the city on one of their tours.

In Brandon, local transit costs $2.10 per ride for an adult. Buses run daily from 6 am to midnight except on Sunday from 9 am to 6 pm, and connect residential areas to great local spots like Chez Angela, Komfort Kitchen, The Dock on Princess, The Hills Spa and Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba along Rosser Ave in the core area. Download the “BDN Transit” app for real-time routes and schedules.

Services like Peg City Car Co-op in Winnipeg let you access a vehicle only when you need it, making it a great option for short trips or spontaneous outings. It’s a convenient, budget-friendly way to explore more that may help you spend less on gas, especially if you’re booking a car with better fuel mileage than your family vehicle. And attractions like The Forks are part of “The Flo Zone”, making it even more convenient and helping you avoid additional parking costs.

If you’d rather move at your own pace, bike rentals are another great option. Winnipeg’s growing network of bike paths and scenic trails makes cycling an easy, affordable way to get around while taking in the sights. Rent a bike for a few hours or a full day and turn the journey itself into part of the experience. Try Bee2gether Tandem Bike Rentals at The Forks, Assiniboine Park and Birds Hill Park, Plain Bicycle, Natural Cycle Works, Kendrick’s Outdoor Adventures and Woodcock Cycle Works. Check out Bike Winnipeg’s website for tips on navigating the city on two wheels.

The Bottom Line

You don’t need to go far, or spend big, to have a great Manitoba adventure. By staying closer to home, choosing free experiences, using other transportation modes and slowing things down, you can still explore more of the province while keeping your budget (and your gas tank) in check.
