Birding

A birder's paradise, see over 390 species.

Manitoba's diversity of habitats—grasslands, wetlands, boreal forest and sub-arctic habitats— provide an exciting opportunity to see an amazing diversity of birds and other wildlife. See thousands of Canadian geese gather at sunset along their fall migratory path or take your adventure to the next level in Churchill, a birding hotspot in northern Manitoba where you can travel to see willow ptarmigan, snow geese and the rare Ross’s gull.

Manitoba is known as a birding mecca. Nestled within three migration corridors, over 390 species of birds have been recorded and 287 have been known to rest in the province.

In the marshlands of Oak Hammock Marsh, get even closer to Manitoba’s bird population with Bird in the Hand, a Canadian Signature Experience where you can take part in a real bird banding program.

Here are just a few birds to find through your binoculars on your next visit to Manitoba:

  • Great Gray Owl, Manitoba’s provincial bird
  • Piping Plovers at Grand Beach Provincial Park
  • Le Conte’s Sparrow
  • Sharp-tailed Grouse
  • Yellow Warbler
  • Sprague’s Pipit
