It's hard to imagine a more perfect setting for paddling a kayak or canoe.

Slip into the clear water and enjoy the spectacular view as beaches stretch back to a ragged border of black spruce, balsam fir and rocky Precambrian Shield.

Spread over more than 2,500 square kilometres of evergreens, placid lakes and rolling rivers, waterfalls and dramatic outcroppings, Whiteshell Provincial Park is ideal for everything from mild beach and golf trips to rugged adventures on the wild side.

Suit up to go swimming, scuba diving and water-skiing. Take a horseback ride or hit the scenic hiking trails - they range from an easy three-kilometre walk in the park to a challenging 60-kilometre trek on the Mantario Trail.

Drop a line off the shore or a boat to hook perch, pickerel, trout or walleye, then cook your catch of the day over a toasty campfire.

In winter, venture out on snowshoes or slip quietly through the trees on groomed cross-country ski trails. Try your hand at ice-fishing and take a scenic cruise along a network of snowmobile trails.

Use your geocaching skills to explore the sights, play tennis and soak up aboriginal and natural history at the Bannock Point Petroforms, the Whiteshell Trappers Museum and the Whiteshell Natural History Museum - and be sure to honk if you love geese at the Alfred Hole Goose Sanctuary.

Choose from resort accommodations, a rustic cabin or full-service campsites close to beaches and playgrounds.

From Winnipeg, head east on the Trans-Canada Highway to entry points at Falcon Lake or West Hawk Lake.
