Point your compass north and marvel at the changing landscape as you enter the city of Flin Flon. Built up on rock outcrop, this quirky city is an ideal home base for northern adventures: from fishing and hiking to visiting astonishing waterfalls and experiencing a thriving arts scene.
What’s in a name? For Flin Flon: it’s fictional character Josiah Flintabbatey Flonatin of The Sunless City. But beyond this unique namesake, it’s the city’s strong mining history, Indigenous culture and lush wilderness that have shaped it into a thriving community of the north.
Located 8 hours north of Winnipeg, Flin Flon is worth the drive for an extended weekend getaway to see some of the best lakes in northern Manitoba or to spend time with the family at a wilderness lodge. In between getting closer to nature, the city offers shopping, restaurants and even one of Manitoba’s only operating drive-in theatres: Big Island Drive In.
In a prairie province, Flin Flon offers a unique landscape that you won’t find elsewhere in Manitoba. The rock outcrop of the area was formed by volcanic rocks that erupted underwater millions of years ago. Some of the best views of this landscape can be seen along Flinty’s Boardwalk, a 4.2 km trail that runs alongside Ross Lake. Along with scenic views, the moderate-level hike also provides geological history via interpretive signs. You definitely don’t want to forget your camera for this excursion!
You can’t go as far as Flin Flon and not take some time to also visit Wekusko Falls Provincial Park, located two hours west of the city. The park’s biggest attraction is Wekusko Falls – one of the most impressive waterfalls in Manitoba.
Along the way, stop at the Iskwasum Lake Campground where you will find the Karst Spring trailhead. This off-the-beaten path hiking trail leads to a mesmerizing babbling spring.
Take a break from outdoor adventures and spend some time exploring the city of Flin Flon. Grab a burger or a milkshake (or both) at the iconic Mike’s Ice N’ Burger, or head to Mugsy’s Deli for classic deli sandwiches and salads. Orange Toad is the place to pick up your morning specialty coffee before perusing locally-owned shops along Main Street like Northern Rainbow’s End Gift and Flowers and Kick It Sports.
Bring your own equipment or link up with a local fishing guide and aim to become a Manitoba Master Angler. Set out onto the pristine and clear waters of Lake Athapapuskow and get ready to reel in trophy catches. The lake is abundant in rainbow trout, giant northern pike, smallmouth bass, walleye and more.
It’s easy to spend an entire day parked on the water, enjoying the company of your loved ones while experiencing the adrenaline rush of reeling in some of Manitoba’s best sink hook catches. Many tour guides will also offer the quintessential experience of a freshly made shore lunch!
Visiting Flin Flon in the winter months? Experience an entirely different angling adventure with world-class ice fishing. Avid anglers should plan their trip in April, when the Flinty Fishing Derby takes place on Lake Athapapuskow, offering cash prizes up to $25,000.
Snowmobiling enthusiasts can enjoy longer seasons in northern Manitoba or take on the challenge of the ambitious 144-km trail from Flin Flon to The Pas.
