On August 24 at the WAG Rooftop Sculpture Garden, in partnership with WAG-Qaumajuq, the Winnipeg Film Group and the Dave Barber Cinematheque are excited to present the 30th anniversary screening of Romeo + Juliet.

In this contemporary take on William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, the Montagues and Capulets have moved their ongoing feud to the sweltering suburb of Verona Beach, where star crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet fall in love and secretly wed. Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation transports the scene to 1990s Venice Beach, complete with hyper-saturated colours and kinetic editing. But for all its postmodern playfulness, the heart of the film remains a timeless story of young love, tested loyalty, and the pressure to conform to family expectations.
