Tea-A-Maria Cafe and B&B

Story of Tea-A-Maria Cafe and B&B. History of Bru Frikirkju Lutheran Church Originally built in 1910 the church served local Icelandic pioneers. The graceful Gothic Revival design, complete with pointed arch windows, a wooden belfry, and a distinctive spire that whispered of careful craftsmanship and timeless faith. It was a community gathering place filled with sermons, song, and sanctuary, its walls holding decades of shared history. Second chance By the late 1990s the church had sadly fallen into neglect. In August of 1997 Albert and Annette Wytinck moved the church to their property just 2 miles south of Cypress River, MB, where they beautifully restored the church giving it new life and purpose once again, naming it Cafe Bru and running it as a cafe and B&B. Later that same year it earned official recognition as a municipally designated heritage site. Offering meals, and hospitality within its vintage walls until 2014. Now reborn once again as Tea-A-Maria Cafe and B&B Wesley and Maria Janzen bought the property in July 2025. And have lovingly retained the arched windows and the vintage touches to preserve its historic charm. Today, the cafe serves comforting bowls of soup and homemade sandwiches and salads. High tea and gourmet suppers by reservation only. While on the lower level, cozy rooms welcome guest to rest amid modern comforts and vintage accents. Honouring the name Why Tea-A-Maria, the name is a tribute to tradition and serenity of afternoon tea, paired with the name Maria a symbol of warmth, hospitality, and the personal legacy of the heart of the home. Together, the name evokes a timeless blend of comfort, tradition and a heartfelt welcome.
