Some hotel stays stand out the moment you arrive and my stay at Wyndham Garden Winnipeg Airport was one of them.

The welcome went beyond a friendly check-in and quickly became an experience that felt thoughtful and connected to community. Located on the Long Plain Madison Reserve, this full-service hotel is Winnipeg’s first hotel on an urban reserve, situated on Treaty 1 territory and owned by Long Plain First Nation. Walking through the east-facing entrance, designed to greet the rising sun, it’s clear this isn’t a typical city hotel. This is a stay shaped by culture, story and contemporary comfort.

This stay works well for travellers who love brunch, thoughtful shopping and time to relax, while still offering family-friendly amenities to tailor your experience.

A Hotel That Tells a Story

Before heading to my room, I slowed down to take in the original Indigenous artwork throughout the hotel. The lobby feels more like a gallery than a pass-through space. It’s filled with vibrant pieces created by artists Garry Meeches, Linus Woods and Cyril Assiniboine, who are all connected to Long Plain First Nation.

Each of the hotel’s 132 guestrooms features custom artwork by Garry Meeches, giving every stay a unique feel. The building’s gentle curve reflects the circle of life, which contrasts the boxy hotel designs we’re used to seeing. Expansive windows bring in natural light, creating an atmosphere that feels open and welcoming.

Support for Indigenous culture is built directly into the space as well. Smudging and pipe ceremonies are welcome, with ventilated areas designed with intention. A dedicated Knowledge Keepers and Elders room offers another quiet space nearby.

Adding to the experience is Kookum’s Corner, the hotel’s 24/7 market located in the lobby. Alongside snacks and beverages, it features Indigenous beadwork, jewelry and art, making it convenient to support Indigenous artists during your visit.

Modern Comfort with Cultural Touches

My room felt bright and spacious, featuring a walk-in shower, mini-fridge, coffee maker and plenty of charging ports. After a busy morning of shopping and exploring, I was ready to settle into the room’s calm ambience.

For families or groups, connecting rooms and suites make it possible to travel together. The hotel is also pet-friendly, with a small fee collected at check-in.

Before dinner, I spent time in the fitness centre, then leaned into one of my favourite parts of any getaway, a swim. The heated indoor pool, complete with a hot tub and waterslide, offers equal appeal for families and adults looking to relax. Ending the afternoon poolside added that unmistakable vacation feeling to my stay.

Brunch, Coffee and Indigenous Cuisine On Site

One of the highlights of staying at Wyndham Garden Winnipeg Airport is having Indigenous-led dining experiences seconds from my room.

Manoomin Restaurant, named after the Ojibway word for wild rice, is led by Cree Red Seal chef Jennifer Ballantyne. The dining area is filled with natural light, which is ideal for brunches with friends.

I started my morning here with the hotel’s Bed & Breakfast package, which includes breakfast for two. The menu highlights fresh ingredients with Indigenous flavours woven throughout, creating a brunch experience that feels extra local.

Later, I stopped by Onishkaan Café for a latte and bannock before heading out. Open daily from early morning into the evening, it’s a cozy stop when shopping at nearby CF Polo Park mall, even if you’re not staying overnight.

As night fell, the hotel shifted into a relaxed and sophisticated rhythm at the Maagonan Gaming Lounge, a comfortable place to watch the game and enjoy a drink without having to leave the building.

Shopping, Entertainment and City Access

The hotel’s location allows you to build a weekend that blends shopping, dining and downtime.

Just minutes away, CF Polo Park mall offers a mix of well-known brands and an Indigenous-owned business, INAC (Indigenous Nations Apparel Company). Established in 2021, INAC blends Indigenous culture with modern style through apparel, accessories and giftware that doubles as thoughtful souvenirs.

A short drive away on St. Matthews Avenue, Teekca’s Aboriginal Boutique is well worth a visit. The shop offers beautifully made moccasins, jewelry and Indigenous wares, with another location at The Forks while browsing downtown.

For a laid back evening out, the Cineplex Scotiabank Theatre Winnipeg is also close by. Because who doesn’t love catching a movie before returning to a cozy hotel room?

Time Outdoors and Indigenous Places of Connection

Over the weekend, I spent time at Assiniboine Park and The Leaf, where the Indigenous Peoples Garden offers a deeper understanding of the land. Informational signage shares teachings about traditional plants, their uses and their importance to Indigenous communities, adding perspective to my experience.

From there, it’s great to continue exploring Indigenous spaces across Winnipeg, including Niizhoziibean at The Forks, Urban Shaman Contemporary Aboriginal Art Gallery, WAG-Qaumajuq and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

A Stay That Gives Back

What sets Wyndham Garden Winnipeg Airport apart is the way it connects travel with community. Staying here supports Long Plain First Nation while offering guests the opportunity to engage with Indigenous traditions, art and food in an authentic way.

The hotel turns a simple weekend stay into a layered Winnipeg experience, highlighting comfort with Indigenous culture and connection.
