Embrace the Wonders of Flin Flon, Manitoba this Winter

Posted: November 07, 2025 | Author: Allison Dalke

Embrace the captivating charm of Flin Flon, Manitoba, where a blend of history and nature awaits. This city offers an array of attractions just waiting to be discovered. Here are 7 things you can do in Flin Flon this winter!

Explore Flinty's Boardwalk and Trail

On your way into the city, stop by and say hi to Flintabetty Flonatin, a roadside statue of a fictional dime novel character of the same name that guards the entrance and is the source of inspiration for the city's name.

Flinty’s Boardwalk circles Ross Lake, a jewel in the heart of Flin Flon, for about 2.2 km and connects to a scenic overlook via Flinty’s Trail (about 2 km long). In winter, the path is beautifully quiet, lined with birch and jack pine. Along the trail, you'll see stunning views of the cityscape as you traverse across the ancient volcanic rock formations that give Flin Flon its moniker "City on the Rocks". The cliffs date back almost two billion years and are considered a geological wonder of Northern Manitoba.

Celebrate Winter at Local Events

Each February, Flin Flon throws a winter party that lives up to its name. The Bust the Winter Blues Festival brings a full weekend of community fun—from family snow sculpting and skating to bonfires, live music and fireworks. The festival is typically held late February to early March at venues across the city, meaning you'll get to experience plenty of what makes Flin Flon charming.

Explore Over 135 kms of Snowmobile Trails

Adventure seekers will love the Border Explorers Snowmobile Club network with over 135 km of groomed routes linking Flin Flon with Creighton and Denare Beach. The rocky shield terrain, frozen lakes and forest views make this one of Manitoba’s most scenic rides.

Note: Due to fallen trees from this summer's wildfires, some snowmobile trails in Northern Manitoba may be impacted. Before heading out, check with trail conditions at SledMB53 or with the local snowmobiling club for the latest trail updates.

Try Ice Fishing with a Northern Lodge

Local anglers know winter means hardwater season and Flin Flon is renowned as one of Canada's top fishing destinations. Plan your visit during prime ice fishing season from January to April and try your best to hook some of Manitoba's trophy species including lake trout, pike, burbot and whitefish. Flin Flon beckon with promises of thrilling catches and unforgettable moments amidst the pristine boreal forest.

Tip: New to ice fishing? Book a hardwater package with Bakers Narrows Lodge—choose from their all-inclusive package or rent their Glacier Ice House or Deluxe Aurora Pod for a luxurious ice fishing experience.

Glide Along the Flin Flon Ski Club Trails

Start small or glide all 28 km of groomed cross-country ski trails through boreal forest with the Flin Flon Ski Club. Traverse the boreal forest and snow-covered rocks and relish every moment of this winter wonderland, then warm up at the chalet before you head to your next activity. Don't have your own skis? Rentals are available on-site most weekends, contact the club to confirm!

Watch the Northern Lights Dance

The aurora borealis is at its peak during the winter months, especially from January to March, when the nights are crisp and dark. One of the most treasured northern experiences is to watch in 'awe' while the northern lights stretch across the nights sky and dances overhead. Find a dark sky spot away from the city lights and let the aurora put on a show.

Tip: Download an aurora forecast app to get notifications when the northern lights are likely to be out!

Discover Local Art and Flavours

After a day outdoors, warm up with local hospitality! Try the The Orange Toad (79 Main St.) for speciality coffee, fresh pastries and local art. For more art, stop by the NorVa Centre, a creative hub housed in a former Co-op building where local artists exhibit everything from pottery and painting to beadwork and photography. The welcoming studio also offers hands-on workshops and a chance to meet the makers shaping Flin Flon’s vibrant arts community.

Just down the block from Orange Toad is Aurora & Pine Bistro (114 Main St.), a woman- and gender-diverse-owned business serving a contemporary blend of modern and sophisticated dishes. Local favourite, Inferno Shawarma and Donair, serves up classics like hearty breakfast platters and handmade pizza alongside shawarma and donairs.

The owners of Inferno also run the cafeteria at the Whitney Forum, offering some of their restaurant menu so you can warm up while watching the Flin Flon Bombers take to the ice. This elite team has a reputation of turning out hockey superstars including Bobby Clarke, Reggie Leach, Gerry Hart, and Ken Baumgartner. Enjoy a game from the beloved Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and tour the Flin Flon Hockey Hall of Fame.
