Rain streamed down the window as I sipped a steaming cup of coffee in my Elkhorn Resort room. Outside, the sky was thick with clouds and the scent of wet pine drifted in with the breeze. Back home, a rainy day might mean cancelled plans, but here, it set the scene for a day of slow, soothing self-care at Klar So Nordic Spa. Nestled just outside the charming townsite of Wasagaming in Riding Mountain National Park, Elkhorn Resort is more than a place to stay. It’s a year-round basecamp for both adventure and restoration.
Staff greeted me with genuine warmth, guiding me through the spa’s layout and sharing tips on how to get the most out of the experience. The name "Klar So" means Clear Lake in Danish, a nod to the spa’s location near Clear Lake and its philosophy of clarity, tranquility and connection to nature. The experience here is built around the Nordic thermal cycle: alternating hot and cold treatments designed to boost immunity, improve circulation and melt away stress. I was more than ready.
I started my journey in one of the outdoor hot tubs, surrounded by natural landscaping. Rain tapped gently on the water’s surface as steam curled my hair. I leaned back, closed my eyes and let the quiet take over. From there, I stepped into the cold plunge pool. The sudden rush of coolness was shocking, but in the best way. It jolted my senses awake and left me buzzing with energy. Working through the cycles, I took time to explore the different spa features from the steam and dry sauna, to the temperate pool perfect for those moments when you want something in between.
Later, I indulged in a customized facial with one of Klar So’s experienced estheticians. The treatment used high-quality products tailored to my skin’s specific needs. The esthetician’s touch was expert and intuitive and I walked out glowing. It was an added bonus to the thermal cycle, grounding my experience in care and intention.
Lunch couldn’t have been easier or more delicious. I stayed in my robe and headed to Restaurant 10, located right within the spa. With a modern interior and a summer deck for sunny days, it’s a serene space designed to keep you in that relaxed mindset. The menu featured nourishing dishes and thoughtful options for all diets. I opted for a hearty meal recommended by the staff. Everything was fresh, satisfying and beautifully presented.
But staying onsite has its perks, too. There’s a family-friendly indoor pool with a twisting water slide, a lily pad walk, indoor and outdoor hot tubs. At night, the adult-only swim time offers a quieter atmosphere under the stars. If you’re looking for more, rent an e-bike and hit the trails, or cozy up at the campfire circle and roast a marshmallow. Kids will love the playground and games room, while adults can take advantage of the fitness centre or unwind in the traditional wood-fired saunas. Elkhorn also hosts an impressive event calendar year-round: workshops, live music, campfires, movie nights and more. Whether you're here for wellness or adventure, there really is something for everyone.
As I watched the sun begin to set, cup of tea in hand, I took stock of the day. I came to Elkhorn seeking rest and I left feeling grounded, with the rainy backdrop only adding to the magic. Klar So Spa gave me space to slow down, reconnect with my senses and prioritize myself in a way that felt indulgent and essential all at once. Klar So Spa at Elkhorn Resort is the kind of place that stays with you. It’s warmth. It’s clarity. It’s Clear Lake, reimagined.
