Winter in Winnipeg opens up in a big way on the Nestaweya River Trail. Where the Red and Assiniboine Rivers meet, the ice becomes a shared pathway for gliding, riding, wandering and warming up along the way.

Here are a few ways to cruise it this season.

Skating

IcBring your own skates or rent a pair at Iceland Skate Rentals inside The Forks Market, lace up and go straight onto the ice. Skating is the classic way to experience the trail, whether you are gliding for kilometres or taking it slow and steady.

New to skating? No worries. Skate assists are available to help you find your balance and enjoy the trail at your own pace. The wide-open river gives beginners space to build confidence while experienced skaters carve smooth lines across the ice.

Ice Biking

For those who prefer wheels over blades, ice biking offers a different way to move across the frozen river. Built with runners instead of tires, ice bikes glide across the ice with a motion that feels part cycling, part skating.

It’s a fun way to glide along the frozen river and experience the trail at a different pace.

Walking

Not every adventure needs speed. Walking along the trail is a simple way to soak up the crisp air and enjoy the trail.

It is a great option for visitors who want to slow down, enjoy the outdoors and watch the mix of skaters and riders cruise by.

Explore the Designer Warming Huts

Scattered along the trail, the designer warming huts offer places to warm up and admire creative architecture on the ice. Each hut brings its own personality to the river and makes for a great mid-trail stop.

And now at The Forks, Travel Manitoba’s Heartwarming Hut adds another welcoming space to visit. Stop by, warm up and take a selfie before heading back out onto the ice!
