Hiking & Biking

Discover the Manitoba outdoors by foot and pedal by exploring the myriad of hiking and cycling trails. Choose from steep, shale cliffs, gentle lakeshore ambles, rocky sub-arctic tundra and more. No need to save energy for the hike or ride home—re-energize at comfy accommodations near the trails.

Downhill (and uphill) cycling at Asessippi

Pack away your snowboard for the summer and choose a new adventure instead - downhill cycling at Asessippi Ski Area & Resort. Wear the dirt off your wheels grinding up and flying down the hilly roads leading into Asessippi Provincial Park, then fall into bed at The Russell Inn or Boulton Manor Suites Bed and Breakfast in the nearby town of Russell.

Give your bike a break the next day and hike a section of the Rossburn Subdivision Trail, a 176 km stretch of former rail line converted to trail.

Hike and bike to your heart’s delight in the Whiteshell

Pedal and hike for a day, weekend or an entire week in the picturesque Whiteshell Provincial Park. Choose from hundreds of kilometres of trails spread throughout the park—challenge yourself hiking the Hunt Lake and Mantario trails or bike the Betula Lake route. Make a trip of it by staying at one of the area’s secluded spots.

Inverness Falls Resort on Brereton Lake: Jump onto the Amisk and Inverness Ridge trails right from your private suite, then come back and unwind in your two-person massage tub. Bring your own bike or use the complimentary wheels provided by the resort. Jessica Lake Lodge: It’s a short hop from your private cabin to the looping Jessica Lake Hiking Trail. Listen to a loon lullaby as you drift off to sleep.

Falcon Trails Resort: Plan your own wilderness retreat with a private chalet style cabin near the water (perfect for a dip or a paddle). Bike or hike the extensive Falcon Ridge Trail system—stroll the Sunshine Trail for a ridge top view of Falcon Lake or head even higher to reach the Top of the World.

Pick your pleasure from 400 km of trails in Riding Mountain

Once you’ve swung by the Nature Shop at the Visitor Centre to pick up a copy of the Trail Guide (published by the Friends of Riding Mountain), you’ll be ready to pound over dirt-packed backcountry biking trails or stroll along the lakeshore.

Squeeze your lungs dry on the Bald Hill and JET trails on the east side of the park, or roll along the grassy mixed surface of the Central Trail on the west side. Take some time to meander the boardwalk through Ominik Marsh, a short walk from the Visitor Centre where you can pick up a self-guided trail kit.

Once your daytime adventures are done, rejuvenate at Elkhorn Resort in a room inside the main lodge, or choose from a selection of private chalets. Don’t forget to pamper yourself between trails with a trip to the Solstice Spa.

Walk into your place in the Turtle Mountains

The rolling trails of Turtle Mountain Provincial Park are ultra-rewarding. Spin for hours on the trail networks starting from Adam Lake, and watch for moose and beaver in the small lakes that dot the park. Climb the Turtle’s Back Hiking Trail at William Lake for your reward—a spectacular panoramic summit view including the Peace Tower at nearby International Peace Garden. Once you’re ready to unwind, put your feet up on the wraparound veranda or sooth sore muscles in the hot tub of the award-winning Walkinshaw Place Bed and Breakfast, a charming spot located just outside the park and named after the first forest ranger in Turtle Mountain.

Make the short jaunt into the town of Boissevain for lunch and stop by the Irvin Goodon International Wildlife Museum before heading back to the trails.

I Walked with the Polar Bears in Churchill

Besides being the polar bear capital of the world, Churchill is internationally famous for beluga whales, caribou and other arctic wildlife, and as a birding hotspot. Tucked along the shore of the massive Hudson Bay, the area is teeming with history that predates the fur trade, with evidence of human existence dating back to 1700 BC.

Mix your love of hiking with amazing wildlife viewing and cultural opportunities in Churchill on an all-inclusive tour from Northern Soul Wilderness Adventures, presented in partnership with Prairie Pathfinders walking club. Learn from your interpretive guide as you explore the Churchill region on foot and take in a beluga whale watching tour on this three-night excursion from August 23-25, 2009.
