11 golf courses just outside Winnipeg sure to boost your handicap (or at least your farmer's tan)

It's not uncommon for golfers to get into a bit of a funk. Whether the swing's slicing, or your putts just aren't dropping, or you're tired of the same old holes on the same old course – a change of scenery is crucial to a golfer's morale (or at least that's what I tell myself when it feels like I'm living in the left bushes on the 8th hole every week).

The good news is, there are plenty of spots to choose from – even outside the city. Sound exotic? Sure, let's go with that. Just don't tell anyone that these 11 courses outside of the city are so close to home that you might not even know you're gone.

John Blumberg Golf Course

Whether you’re looking to sneak in a quick nine after work, or spend your Saturday soaking in the summer weather for 18-holes, John Blumberg Golf Course has got your fix for both. With a total of 27 holes, you’ll get your choice of testing your short-game at their nine hole course, or putting in a full 18 at their lengthier Emerald Course. Located in Headingley, you're technically out of the city while still being able to rip back home in time for supper, or even better, grab some grub at Nick's Inn on the way home.

Bridges Golf Course

Posted up in Starbuck Manitoba, Bridges Golf Course proves year after year to be one of the most well-maintained and enjoyable public courses in Manitoba. The layout combines a links-style format with tree-lines, river traps and rolling elevation to provide a unique experience for golfers who are looking for a little bit of everything. For city-dwellers, the course is just a short 12-minute drive west of McGillivray and the Perimeter Highway to give you the feel of getting out of town while not necessarily taking up your whole day.

Kingswood Golf & Country Club

Within just 20 minutes of the city, the Kingswood Golf & Country Club is a great option when looking for new surroundings for your golf game. The par 71 course is filled with its share of challenging and interesting setups, with many of its holes straddling the La Salle River.

River Oaks Golf Course

Located in Ritchot, Manitoba, River Oaks Golf Course is a great option for golfers of every skill level, mixing in a combination of water hazards and dog-legs with reachable greens and open fairways, as you take in yet another course enjoying the company of the La Salle River.

Selkirk Golf Course & Country Club

Whether you're on your way out to the cabin, or just looking to get outside somewhere beyond city limits, Selkirk Golf Course & Country Club might be the course for you. Placed right alongside the Red River, the course offers a diverse view of any challenge you can think of on a golf course, while still staying on the affordable side.

Larters at St Andrews Golf & Country Club

Larters at St Andrews is an excellent option for golfers who want to test their skills in a variety of ways on the course. With the front-nine providing a more open meadow feel on the fairways, the back nine will challenge you with denser bush and some difficult strategic choices along the way. Pro tip: Take a detour on your way home and get yourself a burger and shake at Half Moon in Lockport.

Netley Creek Golf Course

For folks who frequent cabin country out in the Winnipeg Beach area, Netley Creek is an excellent excursion for the days when you don't feel like going for a dip. Netley Creek offers nine and 18-hole pricing, and elevation changes that really help you feel like you're out of the big city.

Lorette Golf Course

Swinging the sticks at Lorette Golf Course will not only get you out and onto the fairway, but it will also save you some time and money relative to a lot of options out there. Sitting just 15 minutes away from the Perimeter, Lorette's nine-hole course is a great choice even if you're looking to get out just for the evening.

Southside Golf Course

Just off the 59 highway, Southside Golf Course is an excellent affordable option for golfers, and particularly families, with their excellent offer of free access for Juniors after 4pm on Sundays when accompanied by a paying adult. For those of you with kids looking to get into the game, why not Southside?

Teulon Golf & Country Club

Located just 30 minutes north of Winnipeg on the #7 Highway, Teulon Golf and Country Club is a good stop for both the casual and more experienced golfer. With trim fairways and dipping greens, you can get the satisfaction of a nice bounce off your drive, as well as lining up a big breaker for birdie.

The Players Course

The only time you can really get comfortable golfing at The Players Course is on the short drive in from the city. After that, you're looking at a nine-hole course with water at play in all but one hole. That being said, it's a blast to play with tricky traps, drivable greens, and at least a little bit of trouble at every corner.
