Coronavirus and Tourism in Manitoba
April 17, 2020
Dear Industry Partners,
As tourism businesses across the province struggle daily with the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic and its resulting business impacts, offers of help are sure to be welcomed.
One such offer, announced by the Manitoba government this week, is a new service that can help businesses, non-profit organizations and charities facing economic challenges due to COVID-19 connect to support programs like the 75 per cent wage subsidy and the Canada Emergency Business Account, which offers interest-free loans of up to $40,000. A secure call centre will be launched to help inform and guide stakeholders during the COVID-19 pandemic. To request a call, once the system is operational, click on this link to provide your contact information.
We encourage you to take advantage of this new provincial support. We also suggest you visit our new COVID-19 Manitoba Tourism Industry Toolkit, designed to assist Manitoba’s tourism industry in navigating the available resources during this time. Travel Manitoba staff are available to answer your questions and provide support. Please contact Tracy Dandeneau, Senior Manager, Partnership and Visitor Experiences at 204.296.6918 or email@example.com
It is also very much appreciated when we receive your help, and I would like to thank all those who completed our Manitoba COVID-19 Tourism Impact Survey. We received responses from 639 companies, associations and community representatives from across the province and from every tourism sector. Unfortunately, the results were not surprising: almost all respondents have been impacted, most have seen some decline in business and expect to see more, some have been forced to close and lay off employees. Looking ahead, the picture is equally grim: more than half of respondents indicated they will need government financial support to stay in business, (making leveraging all available programs even more critical). The report on the full findings can be found here. If you have questions on the survey, please contact Travel Manitoba Director of Strategy and Development Jackie Tenuta: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Your feedback is also essential in support of the work being done by the Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) on behalf of the industry at a national level. TIAC has been instrumental in advocating for the various financial stimulus and support programs from the Federal Government. They are now working in partnership with Destination Canada on a new survey that will gather information on current impact and recovery issues. Please take part in this survey to ensure that the concerns of Manitoba’s tourism industry are heard at the national level. Take the TIAC survey in English or in French.
Your valuable feedback, to Travel Manitoba and to TIAC, will inform the communication to the Manitoba and Federal governments, and it will provide direction to Travel Manitoba’s work to support the tourism industry during this time of crisis.
Stay safe, stay well, stay home,
Travel Manitoba President & CEO
