Point your compass north and marvel at the changing landscape as you enter the city of Flin Flon. Built up on rock outcrop, this quirky city is an ideal home base for northern adventures: from fishing and hiking to visiting astonishing waterfalls and experiencing a thriving arts scene.
What’s in a name? For Flin Flon, it’s fictional character Josiah Flintabbatey Flonatin of The Sunless City. But beyond this unique namesake, it’s the city’s strong mining history, Indigenous culture and lush wilderness that have shaped it into a thriving community of the north.
Located 8 hours north of Winnipeg, Flin Flon is worth the drive for an extended weekend getaway to see some of the best lakes in northern Manitoba or to spend time with the family at a wilderness lodge. In between getting closer to nature, the city offers shopping, restaurants and even one of Manitoba’s only operating drive-in theatres: Big Island Drive In.
In a prairie province, Flin Flon offers a unique landscape you won’t find elsewhere in Manitoba. The area was formed by volcanic rocks that erupted underwater millions of years ago. Some of the best views of this landscape can be seen along Flinty’s Boardwalk, a 4.2 km trail that runs alongside Ross Lake. Along with scenic views, the moderate-level hike also provides geological history via interpretive signs. You definitely don’t want to forget your camera for this excursion!
