3-Day Itinerary in The Pas / OCN
Manitoba can boldly lay claim to countless hidden gems, many of which are nestled in the north. Wide-open spaces beckon adventurers to discover some of what the north has to offer. One of the most memorable journeys you will ever have is through The Pas, a small town with its own provincial park and a grand lake that stretches for miles and miles. In The Pas is where you’ll discover some of the most crystal-clear waters you will ever see that have nothing to do with it being at a tropical destination. Here’s a three-day road-trip itinerary that takes you on an adventure through parts of the north fishing the waters of Clearwater Lake Provincial Park, exploring the spectacular falls at Wekusko Falls Provincial Park, and learning about the storied past of Snow Lake.
Day 1: Discover The Pas
Begin your morning at Miss The Pas Restaurant, most notable for its funky décor and hearty breakfasts. Once you’ve had your fill, head to the Sam Waller Museum, which houses a wide collection of artifacts, knick-knacks and curiosities curated from the town, its people and the surrounding area. Sign up for a walking to tour to get a look into the town’s historic roots.
Afternoon Spend the afternoon walking Fischer Avenue—be sure to stop into White Feather Cree Ations where local artisan Robert Nabess creates stunning Indigenous beaded jewelry and regalia—you can even have a custom pair of moccasins made. Pop in for a coffee at Lyets Café and then stock up on some summer wardrobe staples at May Twenty7 boutique for designer denim and chic dresses.
Good Thymes is a crowd pleaser with its modern décor, gourmet style pizzas, burgers and appies.
Try your hand with Lady Luck at the Asenesak Casino where slots and gaming tables are sure to bring a little energy to your day.
Day 2: Gone Fishing
Head out of town to Clearwater Lake Provincial Park. Located just a 15 min drive away, you can opt to stay in a hotel in town or book a campsite or yurt at Camper’s Cove. Head to The Caves for a scenic and easy hike amongst mossy rocks and down to the lake’s tropical like blue water.
Head to Pioneer Bay where you can pick up lunch at the beachside kiosk and then enjoy the sand and water.
Book a fishing excursion with Evergreen Resort. Stocked with fish like lake trout and pickerel, Clearwater Lake is perfect for the angler both avid and casual. Watch as the sun sets over the water for one of the most breathtaking views you’ve ever had.
Head back to your campsite for an open-air feast under the stars or back to town for dinner.
Day 3: Snow Lake and Beyond
Head further out of town towards Wekusko Falls. About a 2-hour drive from The Pas, this quiet and pristine area is well worth the drive. Book a night at Wekusko Falls Lodge if you don’t want to the drive both ways in one day.
Once at Wekusko Falls Provincial Park, a short well-marked pathway will take you over and around these spectacular waterfalls.
Afternoon & Evening
Head to the Snow Lake Mining Museum for a look into the area’s storied past and relax in Ladybug Garden, which is as adorable as it sounds. Once you’ve taken in the town, head back to Wekusko Falls Lodge and book a boat tour where you can explore the Indigenous pictographs that decorate the rocks surrounding Tramping Lake. The lodge also rents canoes and motor boats if you want to do some exploring on your own.
Wekusko Falls Lodge offers up hearty home cooked meals to their guests. If you’re heading back to town, be sure to stop at the restaurant at Rocky Lake Resort for local fare like wild rice and homemade desserts.
