Neil Stouffer’s life and art are inseparable. His voracious need to draw has hounded him for as long as he can remember, and his need to live life to its fullest can be seen in a lifetime of intrigue and adventure. Neil can regale you about his stint in the USAF flying B29 missions over North Korea, or how he and some friends shared a studio/gallery in the Village in NYC in the 60s (before he had to leave due to “unpaid parking tickets”), and the “great time” he had in California for “a few years” (he says “buy me a pint and I will tell you all about it”); each of these stories, and more, have created the man who uses his art to create worlds full of wonder and excitement. Neil graduated in 1958 with high honours from the School of Fine Art in Minneapolis, Minnesota, before receiving his Masters Degree in painting from Long Island University. He was an active painter in the New York and Minneapolis art scenes in the 50s and 60s, showing regularly and receiving many awards for his work through the years before moving to Belmont, MB in 1972 where he has lived and worked ever since. Watching Paint Dry celebrates one of the AGSM’s most prolific member’s with a new solo show of recent works that is but a taste of his impressive repertoire.
