Details

In 1914 there was an outbreak of war in Europe. Canada was and is part of the British Empire and it lay directly to the citizens of Canada to be sent into the war. They then waited for their destiny in the trenches of France. In September 1914 a patriotic meeting was held in Winnipeg to prepare the founding of an Icelandic Battalion in Winnipeg. A Battalion that would offer itself ready for service to the Canadian army. In World War l, 1000 soldiers from the Icelandic-Canadian community in Winnipeg and surrounding area did serve in the Canadian Army and Royal Air Force UK.
