A funeral in New Orleans is a joyous affair. Jazz music lingers in the heavy bayou air, as much a part of Crescent City as the mighty Mississippi itself, and the procession marches – no, dances – down the street, celebrating the life of the departed. Louis Armstrong, with a voice “like sandpaper calling”, begins to sing: “I went down, to the St. James Infirmary...”
