Canadian Free Traders Festival
December 29 - Snowshoe Trek 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Join the interpreter and John MacDonnell, fur trader with the North West Company, on this 3km trail as we venture through the woods with komatiks (traditional sleds) to meet with Canadian Free Traders at their wintering cabin to exchange stories, supplies, goods and furs. Enjoy homemade bannock and natural teas. We’ll provide the snowshoes, or bring your own!
December 30 - Workshops, Displays & Demos
19th Century Sewing Workshop 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM
Join textile artist Claire Sparling who will demonstrate 19th century sewing techniques. We will provide your own personal sewing kit, or housewife, to make your own creation. Space is limited for this workshop so please register with the interpreter by calling 204-827-8850 and leaving your contact information.
Sewing Open Session 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Bring your own materials to work on with Claire Sparling. She will also show you various 19th century garb such as sashes, capots, and other unique projects she is working on. Everyone welcome!
Canadian Free Trader Open House 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Meet the Canadian Free Traders as they display various artifacts, furs, arms collections and more at their winter camp. Be prepared to hear some loud booms as they shoot off their muskets and blow the cannons!
