The votes are in and the winner of Roadside Madness is Flintabbatey Flonatin!!! Maybe it’s fitting that the only place in Canada named after a science fiction character who discovered streets of gold is the one that actually takes home the gold.

A little about Flintabbatey and Flin Flon

When prospector Tom Creighton discovered a rich vein of almost pure copper in 1914, he named the spot after Josiah Flintabbatey Flonatin from the novel The Sunless City by J. E. Preston Muddock. Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company quickly established a fully-functional mine with one of the largest smelters in Canada. Now, Flin Flon is a thriving mining community nestled just north of the 55th parallel. It is a prosperous town with a number of stores, restaurants, and services.

In the summer, you can enjoy a good time at the Flin Flon Trout Festival, which has been going strong since 1950. The town also loves its culture! Last year, Flin Flon ranked #4 in all of Canada for most events held during Culture Days. They hosted over 80 events, showcasing Aboriginal arts and crafts, concerts, visuals, cabarets and their famous dance down Main Street. 2015 is going to be even better! Flin Flon and its surrounding area is a beautiful outdoor playground.

Congratulations Flintabbatey Flonatin for winning Roadside Madness! To know more about Flintabbatey Flonatin and his connection to Flin Flon, watch this Canada Vignette from 1978:

Thank you all for participating and sharing your love for Manitoba’s roadside attractions. It’s been a fun week full of upsets, shocking defeats and wild come-from-behind victories. We have been absolutely blown away by the response this competition received. This was our first time conducting a poll on the blog and we had no idea the amount of votes that would come in. It’s been amazing!

A huge shout out goes to Sara the Camel and her many supporters! She was a mighty contender.

Happy Spring Break!

Flintabbety takes it all in Roadside Madness!

Note: At around 11:00 a.m. yesterday, we noticed suspicious activity with the voting. Over 400 votes were cast by three accounts within minutes. We added restrictions to the poll software and removed the suspicious votes. Sorry for the confusion and/or frustration. For future polls, we will use different software to calculate the votes.
