DYK: You can earn some pretty nifty badges by hitting the open road in Manitoba? With the goal of encouraging both local and visiting motorcyclists to explore our province, Manitoba by Motorcycle has created an awesome program that rewards savvy riders with tokens of their adventures. So how can you get one of these guys? Travel to 12 different Manitoba parks, visit 20 small-town statues or pose with 15 Manitoba monuments within a single riding season and submit your photos and you will be awarded with a Manitoba by Motorcycle patch – it’s as simple as that! Here are just a few of Manitoba’s fabulous routes to get you started…

Afternoon cruise in Winnipeg and beyond

Need some good ol’ wind therapy but don’t have the time to commit to a long distance cruise? This trip is ideal for those with just an afternoon to spend on the road, beginning in Winnipeg and looping around to Oakbank, Birds Hill Provincial Park and Selkirk. Point your wheels north and enjoy it all: the great outdoors, historical spots (like the St. Andrews Church and the Selkirk Marine Museum) with plenty of time to grab a bite to eat (at spots like Pineridge Hollow) or make it home for supper.

Southern scoot for a scoop

Got a serious craving for ice cream and burgers? Set your sights to southern Manitoba, and in particular Carman’s Syl’s Drive Inn, on this pleasant ride along hwy #3 that can typically be done with one tank of gas. Before arriving into Headingley, be sure to drop into Beaudry Provincial Park to enjoy the scenery.

Classic drive through the Interlake

The Interlake loop has it all: vikings, snakes, marshes, even a quarry park! The route begins on hwy #236 toward Stonewall before jumping to #7 north toward Teulon – where the Country Kitchen is a great spot for an early lunch (or second breakfast, whichever you prefer). The ride continues on through Narcisse, home to the Narcisse Snake Dens and Arborg before reaching the quaint town of Gimli, home to Viking Park, tons of restaurants and an adorable harbor. Winnipeg Beach is the ideal spot for an ice cream and a stroll down the boardwalk on the way home.

Back road ride to Selkirk and Lockport

For those who ride to escape the routine of every day life: why not explore off the beaten path? This back road route will take you up hwy #8 and right onto River Road Heritage Parkway, one of the most stunning roads in Manitoba. The road will lead you up to Lockport where you can cross the Red River toward East Selkirk. Again, heading off the main roads, take hwy #9 to McPhillips Road toward hwy #67. Continue through to Stonewall before heading back home the long way: down the perimeter to Roblin Boulevard and through the serene Assiniboine Park.

Scenic route into the Parkland and Western Manitoba

If you’re aiming to hit all the major motorcycle routes in Manitoba, you certainly won’t want to leave out this jaunt through the Parkland and Western Manitoba. Start in Winnipeg and head up hwy #6 through small communities like St. Laurent (which has beautiful beaches, by the way) and through to The Narrows. Continue onto Dauphin and Riding Mountain National Park, where you can take some time to view the bison enclosure or grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants of Wasagaming. Next, ride down the scenic #10 to Minnedosa (a very hilly area of Manitoba) before going through Neepawa, Glenboro (home to Sara the Camel), and the RM of Victoria where you can visit a Trappist Monastery.

Ridin’ into the Whiteshell

A trip into the gorgeous Whiteshell Provincial Park may seem like the obvious choice – but it’s still a good one! Take your pick of starting through Lockport or straight out of the city onto hwy #15, there’s no bad choice here! The route will take you into the park and up past Brereton Lake (which by the way, has an excellent lodge that offers lunch and dinner) and Rainbow Falls. Continue through until you reach Pinawa, where a stop at the Pinawa Dam Provincial Heritage Park is an absolute must.

All about Southern Manitoba

Discover the gems of southern Manitoba on this wicked route into the heartland. Once again, head down through the RM of Victoria and continue past Spruce Woods Provincial Park, where you can stop to admire the Spirit Sands or try a challenging hike. Turn onto hwy #10 and go south toward the stunning International Peace Garden. Stop to smell the roses before heading back out onto the road with stops in Morden (home to Bruce, the largest publicly displayed mosasaur) and Steinbach.
