With spring break around the corner, get ready to ship the kids off to grandma’s house and spend some quality time with your partner. Here’s an idea for a romantic road-trip, filled with relaxation, entertainment and great food.
The first stop on your kid-free vacation is for freshly made, sweet and sticky cinnamon buns from the Gladstone Bakery and Eatery as you drive through Manitoba’s central plains. Keep heading west to explore the town of Minnedosa, located in Manitoba’s valley paradise.
Walk the town’s historic or nature walking trails. Follow along the spillway, around the bison compound and across the swinging bridge through the Heritage Village.
Next, it’s time to check in at a charming bed and breakfast in Minnedosa. Choose Tilson Place, also known as the Castle Bed & Breakfast, a historic Queen Anne home with an eclectic collection of antiques and art.
Or head off to the farm to settle in at the Fairmont Bed & Breakfast, an award-winning B&B in a 1914 farmhouse.
Drive into Brandon (it’s about half an hour) for dinner and a show. Make a reservation at the cozy and quirky Hansel & Gretel’s Schnitzel House – if it’s a Friday, enjoy the buffet filled with German specialties. The rock opera musical Jesus Christ Superstar is playing at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium from March 26-29. Or, instead of theatre, take in a rousing horse show at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair at the Keystone Centre (March 30 –April 4).
After enjoying a hearty and home-cooked meal to start your day, bid farewell to your bed and breakfast hosts as you head north to Elkhorn Resort on the edge of Riding Mountain National Park. Take advantage of their Ultimate Relaxation package, which includes a credit for use at the Solstice Spa. Enjoy a couples massage, where a massage therapist will teach you how to give the ultimate in reciprocal relaxation.
Then, enjoy a great dinner at the Mountain Grill, and finish your meal with an indulgent dessert, maybe opting for the crispy bread pudding donut bites.
To complete your adults-only adventure, head to Winnipeg where there are plenty of options to keep the stress of everyday life at bay. Enjoy a laid back brunch at local favourite, The Tallest Poppy, newly reopened on Sherbrook Street. Try the Belgian waffles made by an actual Belgian, or house made sausage in the Poppy Breakfast.
Head to Ten Spa at Hotel Fort Garry for your choice of couples’ packages. The “Hot and Steamy for Two” includes a self-detox Hamam, hot peel facial, manis and pedis, plus lunch and a bottle of champagne. Or, visit Thermëa, the Scandinavian style spa to rejuvenate in the saunas and hot tubs.
