9 ways to have the BEST Palentine's Day ever

Posted February 14, 2020

So, it's almost Valentine's Day and you're single. No biggie - just grab some of your closest (and fellow single) friends and get together for some fun this weekend. Romance is completely optional with these nine ideas for Palentine's Day!

Get hands-on at DIY Craft Bar

Have you ever felt particularly crafty, only to realize you have literally none of the materials required for said craft? That's where DIY Craft Bar comes in. Choose a project, choose a wine or beer, and settle in with your friends for an evening of DIY-ing! DIY Craft Bar is having a special Galentine's Day Special on February 13.

Have a gal's (or pal's) getaway to South Beach Casino and Resort

Craving the beach in the middle of February? South Beach Casino and Resort has you covered (minus the sand, of course). Take off on a weekend getaway to test your lady luck, swim in the beautiful pool and enjoy several restaurants (and a buffet) on site.

Go skating at the duck pond

The best part about skating single is that you don't have to hold anyone's hand. Hand holding means you fall when they fall. That's love, right? There are so many benefits to being single. Have your pick of the many spots to skate throughout the province, but if you're in Winnipeg, we suggest the picturesque duck pond at Assiniboine Park!

Make your very own hanging moss ball

What's that? A hanging moss ball doesn't sound too appealing? Think again. Kokedama, aka the 'poor man's bonsai', is made using a combination of tropicals, moss and a special soil mix from Japan. The result is a beautiful hanging plant that you get to take home! Take the workshop at Verde Plant Design on Sunday, February 16 (we know, we know, not Valentine's Day, but close enough).

Go behind-the-scenes at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights

Friday Night Rights at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights is a great, low-cost way to get out of the house on Valentine's Day. The event costs $5 and includes a behind-the-scenes tour on a first come, first serve basis. If you want to do something a little bit more fancy, you can also make a reservation at Era Bistro for a delicious, four-course meal - because Valentine's Day dinners aren't just for couples!

Spend time outside

If you're feeling a bit down this Valentine's Day weekend, refresh your mind, body and soul by breathing in the great outdoors. There are endless ways to experience winter in Manitoba, including but not limited to snowshoeing, skiing, or simply by visiting some of the province's rural communities. Women Who Hike is also putting on an outdoors event this month, details here!

Get down on Friday flow

Bet you never thought you'd be spending Friday night at a yoga studio! The Gettin' Down On Friday series at Awesome Hot Yoga is back with a special Anti-Valentine's Day class. The upbeat, drop-in flow practice costs $5 (cash only) and features songs about the single life.

Learn to make a mean cocktail

Capital K Distillery is Manitoba's first family owned and operated producer of handcrafted spirits. A cocktail class includes a tour of the facilities (it's fascinating to see how alcohol is actually made) and a hands-on demonstration of some tasty cocktails made with their signature Tall Grass Prairie spirits. Expect lots of laughs and a fair bit of shakin' (lesson #1: you don't actually have to vigorously shake most cocktails).

Take a walk through the Legislative grounds

Surprise your best friend with a thermos of hot chocolate and embark on a winter walk through the Manitoba Legislative Building grounds to see an array of twinkling lights. The lights were set up as part of Manitoba 150's Illuminate 150 program and will remain lit until July!
