Within minutes of arriving at our Buffalo Point cabin, the neighbours arrive to introduce themselves.
They are friendly, outgoing and very, very furry.
Close encounters with wildlife, in this case two female deer, are common place at Buffalo Point. They wander up to the cabins, cross tree-lined lanes and skitter in and out of the surrounding woods.
Buffalo Point is a place for many magical moments. And those moments are there for anybody's taking.
You'll gaze upon the water as the orange sun slowly dips into the drink. You'll sip glasses of pinot or refresh with a beer while being hypnotized by dancing flames during a late night campfire. And the call of the loon will echo over the lake, beckoning you awake every morning.
Located on a sliver of land at the farthest southeastern point of Manitoba, Buffalo Point Resort is a picturesque playground for campers and nature lovers, anglers and hunters, golfers and boaters.
Your feet are planted on Manitoba soil but look east and Ontario lays on the horizon. Look south and Minnesota's lake district fills the expanse of water. It's serene. It's bewitching. And every vista is a postcard.
Buffalo Point has the charms of camp life without any "roughing it." In short, it's a great retreat for nature lovers who don't want to wrestle with tent posts or communal showers. (Of course, outdoorsy types can get that experience too at the public campground.) But for the sake of saving time, energy and exhaustive packing, renting a waterfront cabin delivers nature at your doorstep but with the added bonus of indoor plumbing and a backyard barbecue.
Just two or so hours southeast of Winnipeg, the resort is a one-size-fits-all escape. Golfers drive, pitch and putt on Lake of the Sandhills, a top-grade course that dips into the woods and dances along the shoreline. (Insiders' tip: Expect at least one ball to go for a swim.) The full-service resort and conference centre has an in-house restaurant and lounge and plays host to many golf tournaments throughout the summer.
Nearby, a short wilderness trail winds its way along the waterfront, circling back to the golf course, which is located a short drive from the cabins.
Back at Buffalo Bay Beach, you'll discover a family-friendly, water lovers' playground a short stroll from the cabins. That's where the marina, beach, boardwalk and boat launches lay. Additional cabins are located near the marina but aren't technically waterfront properties. The marina stocks all the essentials and a few extras, including liquor, firewood and fishing bait.)
A late-day dip in the lake caps a perfect day "roughing it" at Buffalo Point.
As you slip into the water for a sunset swim, you'll wonder how more people haven't discovered this magic slip of wilderness.
And you'll feel like you're getting away with something.
