June 21 is National Aboriginal Day -- a special day to celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding achievements of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in Canada.

Here are a couple of big events happening in Manitoba:

The Forks

APTN is hosting Aboriginal Day Live -- a day-long celebration with a variety of family-friendly activities, including a Celebration Village, Skateboard Park & Competition, Competition Pow Wow, FREE live concerts and fireworks.


Free to all, Thompson's Aboriginal Day events begin with a sunrise ceremony at daybreak with many activities, crafts, a community BBQ, contests (jigging, log sawing, goose calling, moose calling, trap setting, etc.) to follow. Food booths include Bannock Burgers or Indian Tacos. The evening includes more entertainment, the Soaring Eagle Awards (recognizing outstanding Aboriginal people in the categories of Youth, Adult and Elder), retiring of the flags and fireworks.
