Birding

Birds From Every Direction

Welcome to Birding in Manitoba – nestled within three migration corridors over 390 species of birds have been recorded and 287 known to nest. Close to the geographic centre of North America, Manitoba attracts birds from east and west. A diversity of habitats — grasslands, wetlands, boreal forest and sub-arctic habitats, provide an exciting opportunity to see an amazing diversity of birds. The best part is that it’s accessible. There are boardwalks, viewing mounds, signage, and other types of infrastructure that make it a satisfying experience. Plus, you can travel through three different ecosystems in a day and handily cover several birding hotspots.

With some luck find it all within reach – Spruce Grouse, Sharp-tailed Grouse, Ferruginous Hawk, Yellow Rail, American Three-toed Woodpecker, Philadelphia Vireo, Sprague’s Pipit, Golden-winged Warbler, Connecticut Warbler, Baird’s Sparrow, and Le Conte’s Sparrow, to name a handful. And, of course, don’t forget Manitoba’s provincial bird – the majestic Great Gray Owl.

Manitoba’s rich diversity of habitat means you’re just as likely to spot a variety of other interesting wildlife – from black bears to polar bears, beavers to beluga whales, and wolves to moose and elk. Add a refreshing hike to your birding adventure, visit eclectic museums tucked away in prairie towns, and absorb the cultural traditions of the First Nations people and early settlers.

Begin your Manitoba birding adventure here.
