Hecla Provincial Park

Hecla Provincial Park Lush forest, rugged shoreline, scenic beaches and bountiful wildlife blend within this

With its topographical melange of dry limestone cliffs, dew-kissed meadows, beaches, forests and bogs, Hecla Provincial Park has something for everyone.

The rugged shoreline opens up at two white sand beaches - Sunset Beach just north of the campground and Gull Harbour beach on the south shore of the bay. Swim, fish offshore or paddle out to open water on one of the largest lakes in Canada, or stay on shore and enjoy tennis courts, an 18-hole golf course and marina.

Take your binoculars to watch for cormorants, herons, songbirds and waterfowl at Grassy Narrows Marsh, where you might see snapping turtles, beavers, minks and foxes. Hike or bike along the trails and boardwalks to viewing towers and blinds that will get you up close and personal with pelicans, terns and maybe even a moose or two.

In summer, park interpreters offer guided walks in the marsh and the restored Icelandic village, along with evening programs at the outdoor amphitheatre.

In winter, venture onto the frozen lake to try your luck at ice-fishing. There are several huts to keep the wind out and the good times in. Hecla has excellent cross-country ski and snowmobile trails.

A highlight of the Gull Harbour Trails system is the scenic Lighthouse Trail, a photographer's delight that takes you along the peninsula between Gull Harbour and the Lake Winnipeg narrows.

You'll find a large campground with 213 spots, vacation cabins and a bed and breakfast, along with the Lakeview Hecla Resort and conference centre. Follow Hwy. 8 just north of Riverton.
