There is nothing that says summer has arrived in Manitoba more than a day, weekend or week spent at one of this province’s renowned festivals. Make some memories under the prairie sky at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. Sing along with the stars under the stars at Rainbow Stage. From comedy to corn to cowboys there is a summer festival in every corner of Manitoba.

DISCOVER THE WINNIPEG FOLK FESTIVAL

Whether you are a 38-year veteran or a festival first-timer, there is always something to discover at the Winnipeg Folk Festival.  Folk music is an ever-changing genre that is enjoying a revival of sorts here in the 21st century and at the Winnipeg Folk Festival you’ll discover some of the newest sounds alongside traditional favourites.

Discover the big blue prairie skies. While festival-goers come for the music, the impressive natural setting of Birds Hill Provincial Park with its open prairie and trembling aspen are the perfect backdrop for this world-renowned festival. And the big blue prairie skies and stunning sunsets make those incredible moments of music magic that much more memorable.

Discover the legends and your next favourite artist. Running July 6-10, this year’s Winnipeg Folk Festival features Blue Rodeo on opening day playing all the songs from the 1993 album, Five Days in July.  Don’t miss the charming acoustic performance by sisters Tegan and Sara on Thursday, July 7. Friday, July 8 sees the magnificent k.d. lang take to the stage and to perform with her stellar new band, Siss Boom Bang. In between these music legends, be on the lookout for your next favourite artist.  Maybe it’s Caravan Palace, a self-described ‘electro-swing’ group that is one of the hottest touring folk acts in Europe. Or maybe it’s Dirk Powell, who combines Appalachian roots with Cajun traditions and is one of the most sought after keepers of traditional American music.

Discover the talent from your own backyard. It’s no secret that Manitoba makes great music. So devote some time to the locals, with the folk melodies form The Crooked Brothers, the soul of Imaginary CitiesOh My Darling’s Franco-folk and the vintage guitar tones of Twilight Hotel.

Discover handmade treasures. There are over 50 artisans who set up shop at the festival, selling their art, crafts, jewellery, clothing and more. Stop by and check out their work, often made with recycled and reused goods, or watch them create right on the spot at the demonstration stages.

Discover your next family tradition. With a dedicated Family Area and programming for kids, the Winnipeg Folk Festival is a great place for families.  And the festival’s Quiet Campground is the perfect place for little ones to rest after an eventful day.

Both full festival passes and day tickets are available. For ticket information and the entire Winnipeg Folk Festival line-up, go to www.winnipegfolkfestival.ca.

RAINBOW STAGE TO FEATURE GEORGE WENDT IN HAIRSPRAY

George Wendt of Cheers fame will star in Hairspray at Rainbow Stage in August.

Although not a festival, Kildonan Park’s Rainbow Stage is a summer staple for many families. This summer the open-air theatre presents CATS directed by Ray Hogg from June 21 to July 10, 2011. HAIRSPRAY, directed by Tracey Flye opens on August 4 and runs until August 21, 2011.

Wendt says he is looking forward to once again work in Canada. In 2010, George appeared as Edna at Confederation Theatre in PEI. The role of Edna is not new to George as he performed the role on Broadway and is also looking forward to once again be working with Canadians Stephanie Pitsiladis and Larry Mannell (Rainbow Stage-Wizard of Oz/Crazy 4 You). While most famous for his Norm Peterson role on the long-running television show Cheers, Wendt has also been busy on the stage, appearing in a multitude of plays.

Rainbow Stage is known for their dedication to the development of Manitoban talent and believes that by giving our talented young people the opportunity to work alongside and learn from North America’s most talented actors, while delivering outstanding musical theatre is a win win situation for all in the community.

There will be one pre-opening night sponsored by McNally Robinson for CATS on June 20, 2011 and two pre-opening night shows sponsored by Assiniboine Credit Union on August 2 and Canada Safeway on August 3 for HAIRSPRAY.

Season ticket packages for both productions are currently on sale, until quantities last. For tickets and more information, go to www.rainbowstage.net.
