Motor Country Club centennial at Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site
Parks Canada will celebrate a very special centennial on Sunday, August 18 at Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site – the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Motor Country Club at the fort.
In 1913 the Winnipeg Automobile Club, an avant-garde group of motoring enthusiasts, leased Lower Fort Garry from the Hudson’s Bay Company and established the Motor Country Club. For nearly 50 years, Lower Fort Garry served as an exclusive country club and golf course. To celebrate the centennial, Parks Canada has a full day of fun activities and special programming planned.
For the first time, a display of classic and antique automobiles will be held within the walls of the fort. Over 20 vehicles, spanning the decades from the early 1900s to the present day, will be featured in the fort’s historic setting. There will be special tours and displays focused on the Motor Country Club era at Lower Fort Garry, as well as a mini-golf course, Manitoba Public Insurance’s “Mini-Car Town” for kids, and much more included in the regular entry fee.
