Hear Something New

Expand your playlist and your appreciation for new or new-to-you music with some great performances.

The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s New Music Festival runs January 28 to February 2. The 22nd instalment of this festival full of avant-garde programming celebrates the music of one of the greatest minimalist composers, Steve Reich. Also featured are dancers from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and Dame Evelyn Glennie, percussionist extraordinaire. The final night of the festival looks at new music with from a pop perspective. Pop Nuit is headlined by Grammy Award-winning violinist Sarah Neufeld of Montreal’s Arcade Fire, and also features local avant-pop group Royal Canoe performing an album by Beck which was only released on sheet music and DJ Tasman Richardson who uses only audio from film clips.

Expand your taste in music with performances at the William Glesby Centre in Portage la Prairie, which presents live music every Saturday night. Or take in the concert series presented by the Eastern Manitoba Concert Association at the Pinawa Community Centre. On tap this winter are blues and classical performances. The Virden Community Arts Council’s concert series includes Canadian country star Victoria Banks and the melodic and thoughtful pop music of Jaylene Johnson.
