Do Something New

Instead of hibernating this January, why not get out and see what kind of adventures you can find in our wintery wonderland.

If you’ve never tried skiing or snowboarding, check out one of the province’s seven fully-groomed hills, many of which offer sleep-and-ski packages with lodgings at nearby resorts. If staying on relatively flat land is more your thing, sign up for the 6-kilometre open class event during the 37th Annual Manitoba Loppet, a cross country ski race hosted by the Whiteshell Cross Country Ski Club. More advanced skiers can tackle the 15- or 25-kilometre race.

For those craving something more intense, try harnessing the wind to catch some air while snow kiting at Oak Hammock Marsh. Visit Boost Kiteboarding or Aerial Kiteboarding for info on gear and lessons. Scale new heights with the Club d’escalade de Saint-Boniface, whose members maintain a 20-metre outdoor ice-climbing wall that affords breathtaking views of downtown Winnipeg. Or make like a human hamster ball at Adrenaline Adventures, where you can try extreme orbiting, or Xorbing, a new outdoor craze that sends folks rolling down a hill in a giant plastic ball.
