Beavers, Buicks and teacups: Welcome back to Lower Fort Garry

Published: 04/07/2014

Welcome Back to Lower Fort Garry

This is the site where the first of the numbered treaties was made between the Crown and the area’s First Nations, creating a gateway to settlement in the west. It’s also home to Western Canada’s first prison, first asylum for the mentally ill and first training facility for the storied North-West Mounted Police.

This is a place of firsts. And this summer, Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site offers some more firsts with exciting new programs for the whole family.

Enter through the massive gates, where colourful characters from the past welcome you as they sweep you into their world.

Explore the beautifully restored stone heritage buildings placed on the banks of the Red River, where you’ll hear the ping of the blacksmith’s hammer, feel and touch the hides in the fur loft or barter an advantageous deal in the sales shop.

After that, step inside the past at The Big House where both servant and sophisticate share their worlds, their chores and their gossip with you. For the little ones in tow, grab some garb from the tickle trunk and join in an imaginary tea party.

History buffs become part of a human timeline in an interactive tour that takes you from Beavers to Buicks. Finish your day with games of skill like croquet and chess and then put your inner architect to work on your very own Red River frame house.
