| International Peace Garden | | | |  |  | International Peace Garden
A 930 ha/2,300 ac., non-profit, botanical garden and park dedicated to the long-standing peace between Canada and the United States of America is located on the border of Manitoba and North Dakota, 22 km/14 mi. south of Boissevain. Floral gardens, campground, gift shop, cafe, interpretive centre and programs, hiking trails and picnic areas. Brochures available upon request. Main season mid-May to mid-September. Admission to enter park.
Noted for exquisite landscaping, the garden features:
A unique 5.5 m/18 ft. working Floral Clock with nearly 3,000 flowers, run by GPS.
The Peace Chapel features three walls of fossil-embellished Manitoba limestone with quotations from "people of peace."
The September 11 Memorial displays 10 beams from the World Trade Center in the formal garden.
The Peace Tower, 35 m/120 ft. high, represents the people from the four corners of the world coming together in the common cause of peace.
The Carillon Bell Tower sounds every quarter-hour from 14 chimes. The bells range in weight from 250 lbs. to 2,000 lbs., totalling 20 tons.
The Historic Lodge is built of native stone and Manitoba timber by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the late 1930s. The CCC also built the dam and spillway that created Lake Udall.
The International Music Camp has weekly sessions in band, choir, orchestra, dance, drama and other fine arts, during June and July. The Royal Canadian Legion Athletic Camp has weekly sessions in gymnastics, basketball, equestrian, volleyball and other sporting events.
