Rossburn Historic Sites

Near Rossburn visit a mass grave and monument commemorating the Ukrainian settlement in Canada and where in 1899, 42 persons succumbed to scarlet fever. Designed in the spirit of old world architecture are: Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church, and Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Churches open by appointment.

Marconi School, built in 1922, is open spring to fall. In 1899, the Ukrainian settlers built small tent-shaped pole structures with sheaves of rye straw, known as buddas which were home to the pioneers until their homesteads were assigned. A unique experience awaits visitors at the Mennonite Heritage Village (Canada) Inc. This 40-acre complex spreads out from a street reminiscent of the Mennonite villages found in southern Manitoba during the late 1800s. A windmill with 20 m/60 ft. sails dominates the village. Century-old dwellings, church and school are furnished to the period. The Livery Barn Restaurant serves tasty Mennonite fare, from traditional recipes, in a pioneer setting. The general store offers locally crafted items, stone-ground flour, old-fashioned candy, a wide selection of souvenirs. Open May, June, September 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday, noon - 5 p.m. Sunday; July and August 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday, noon - 6 p.m. Sunday.

The Village Centre houses exhibition galleries, a room for the care and preparation of collections, and public space. Pioneer Days is held every August long weekend. Ukrainian Museum of Canada, Manitoba Branch

The museum, located in the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral, a Winnipeg landmark, features a Ukrainian Baroque architectural style with an exterior mosaic by Leo Mol, a carved icon screenwall, stained glass windows and religious icons. It houses a collection of Ukrainian folk arts and crafts, traditional dress of various regions, Easter eggs, wood carvings, a library and gift shop. Spruce Woods Provincial Park
The park contains the desert-like area known as the Spirit Sands, a 5 sq km tract of open blowing sand dunes that tower 30 metres above the surrounding prairie. Spruce Woods and its desert is home to the northern prairie skink (Manitoba's only lizard), western hognose snake and two species of cacti; all are unique in Manitoba. Experience Spirit Sands and Devil's Punch Bowl (an eerie pond formed by the action of underground streams) by hiking along self-guided trails or by horse-drawn covered wagon rides.

Explore rolling hills of native prairie, majestic white spruce, lush deciduous forests and mysterious blue-green ponds as you wander along the many interpretive and hiking trails. Equestrian and mountain bike enthusiasts can explore the wilds of Spruce Woods by following the many back-country trails. Spruce Woods has its own equestrian campground and can be booked by calling (204) 827-2654.

The park has a concession, store, gift shop operated by Friends of Spruce Woods, modern campgrounds, yurts, showers, laundromat, outdoor games area, beach, snowmobile trails, cross-country skiing, toboggan hill. The visitors service centre has a wide range of interpretive programs including an amphitheatre, campfire talks, guided hikes, children's events, interpretive display building and extensive winter programs. Louis Riel Statue, created by sculptor Miguel Joyal and commissioned by the Manitoba Métis Federation, is located on the south grounds of the Legislative Building facing the Assiniboine River. The statue commemorates Riel's contribution to the development of Canadian Confederation and his role, and that of the Métis, as founders of Manitoba.
