Manito Ahbee Festival

Location: Winnipeg, Manitoba
Dates: November 2 – 6, 2011
Website:
manitoahbee.com

From hoop dances to hip-hop, the Manito Ahbee Festival brings together people from all nations in sharing and celebrating Aboriginal culture.

Manito Ahbee means “where the Creator sits” – a name that comes from a sacred site located in Whiteshell Provincial Park. The historically-significant, sacred site has been home to many gatherings of Aboriginal people; a place where traditional teachings and wisdom have long been shared.

The Manito Ahbee Festival brings the same spirit of sharing to an urban environment: the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba (Canada).

2011 marks the sixth year for this exceptional, multi-day festival, which continues to grow in size and recognition as a ‘must-attend event” every fall. The Festival draws participants – musicians, dancers, artisans and families – from all over North America who share cultural events and experiences with people of all ethnic backgrounds, including:

Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards and Red Carpet:

The Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards honours the best in Aboriginal music from across the continent as voted on by fans from all over the world –including you! Vote for your favourite artists in the Best Country, Blues, Rock, Songwriter, and other categories by visiting www.aboriginalpeopleschoice.com  Then watch the live televised show or, better yet, be there in person.

Indigenous Marketplace and Trade Show:

The Indigenous Marketplace and Trade Show features a variety of authentic Aboriginal art, crafts, clothing and jewelry available for sale. You can even meet with the Artisans to discuss their wares, ask questions and talk about the history of their craft. The Marketplace and Trade Show is your one-stop centre for genuine cultural goods.

International Competition Pow Wow:

Pow Wow time is Aboriginal people’s way of coming together; a way to join in dancing, singing, visiting, renewing old friendships, making new ones but – most importantly – for celebrating and honouring traditions. At the Manito Ahbee Pow Wow, more than six hundred dancers and over 25 drum groups from across the continent come together to compete in contemporary and original categories.

From the traditional to the trendsetting, the Manito Ahbee Festival celebrates the past, present and future. It’s more than a festival. It’s an experience.

Be part of it all, November 2nd – 6th.
